What’s in a name - Most of the pups from this wonderful Zeus and Misty litter were donated to Summit Assistance Dogs and became their “H” litter. We were fortunate to keep one boy who wore an orange collar. He particularly stood out because he was larger than the rest (we called him “big guy”) so could have thrown his weight around yet he was very loving. Not having a true litter theme, we chose to maintain an association with his dad (Celestial Thunder) by seeking out an appropriate mythological god. In Norse mythology, there was a god associated with thunder and lightning who was a protector and that seemed to fit this lovely boy. And that’s how Misty Mountain Hammer of the Gods – Thor – was born.

Life With Thor

Thor is our favorite dog. He has an uncanny resemblance to his father (Zeus) though I don’t recall Zeus having quite as much puppy energy as Thor - he doesn’t want to miss anything so is everywhere at once, plays hard and reluctantly takes a nap when he’s too tired. One of the pictures in the slideshow above shows Thor between Flash and Diamond who he thoroughly exhausted playing with them and is patiently waiting for them to wake up. Thor also appears to have inherited from his father chewing up expensive items; they both definitely have fine taste! Thor is co-owned and wonderfully spoiled and loved by the Gevings. We are fortunate that he comes to visit us now and again.

Thor enjoys the show ring, like his full sibling (Champion Sugar Kane) and half siblings (Diamond, Laeahi,and Flash) who are catching the judges’ eyes and racking up championship points. We look forward to cheering him and his siblings on their way to their championships.

What’s in a name – Bringing two wonderful Grand Champions (Zeus and Prada) together for a litter of spectacular pups, none other than a stellar litter theme would fit – so a Diamond theme was chosen. For those who know diamonds, the Whiteflash A Cut Above diamond is at the pinnacle of diamond cut quality. A Cut Above diamond will outshine all others, expressing the full beauty of the gem within. With each glance it will sparkle and flash, putting on its own magical light show. And that’s how Misty Mountain A Cut Above – Flash – was born.

Life with Flash

Flash is our favorite dog. We had the fortunate opportunity to raise Flash as a puppy until he was nine months old due to the tough entry restrictions for Hawaii where his owner, Lavonne Hara, lived. Diamond and Flash were the best of friends and constant companions since day one – it was tough on Diamond (and on us!) to send Flash home. Only bright side was having a good excuse to visit Hawaii more often. Flash has a wonderfully friendly temperament who eagerly investigates new things, people, and dogs. He has a blast in the show ring and in the water (achieving his WC at his first experience with birds!) – much like his sisters, Diamond and Laeahi. We look forward to all of his successes in the conformation and obedience ring and winning the hearts of Hawaiians.

Misty Mountain A Cut Above “Flash” wins BOB/Group 4 for his Second Major

Flash strikes again at his third outing in Hawaii! On Saturday, January 28, 2012, Flash entered the ring in the 9 – 12 month puppy class at the Aloha State Sporting Dog Association Dog Show and came out of the ring as Best of Breed under the keen eye of judge Robert Robinson who said “you’re going to have fun with this dog”. But, wait, there’s more! Flash goes into the Group ring with other top sporting dogs and wins a Group 4! Congrats to owner/handler Lavonne Hara.

Flash's First Show in Hawaii

Flash (aka Misty Mountain A Cut Above or Diamond and Laeahi’s brother out of Grand Champion parents Zeus x Prada) made his showing debut in Hawaii at the West Oahu Kennel Club on Saturday, January 21, 2012. Flash showed like a gem and took Best of Breed over 3 specials then strutted his stuff in the Group ring and took home the Group 1 blue ribbon. Thanks to Bernadette Cox for noticing his sparkle in the ring. How exciting to enter the Best in Show ring as a puppy! He is owned, loved, and handled by Lavonne Hara. Congratulations!

DJ’s Pedigree

What’s in a name - The sire and dam of this litter (Zeus and Bala) have been best of friends since puppyhood – they would race and chase around the yard, playing ball and digging. If Zeus got to the toy first, he would always (and still does!) give it to the insistent Bala. We brought these wonderful playmates together and produced some fun-loving pups. Bala’s breeder and co-owner, Christine Tye (Gingerbred Labradors) calls the graceful Bala a “ballerina” so a dance litter theme emerged. To commenmorate Zeus and Bala playtime in the yard and give some “edge” to our “ballerina”, we chose to name her after a percussive form of dance called Stepping - a movie and main character helped with the rest . And that’s how Misty Mountain Stomp the Yard – DJ – was born.

Life with DJ

DJ is our favorite dog. DJ and her siblings were a fun and loving litter with good temperaments – they loved to romp and play much like their mom, Bala, who loves to be where the action is and cannot get enough play time with her ball. DJ likes to also assess the situation so sits and observes before she takes action – much like when her dad, Zeus, was a pup. DJ has a wonderful big coat, good topline, with big bone – much like BOTH of her parents. Two of her sisters (Pandora and Shamrock) moved to California but will be joining her in the show ring. High hopes for DJ her siblings.

Accomplishments

DJ loves to eat and snore after playing hard. She is enjoying being a puppy!

What’s in a name – Having the great fortune to live with two wonderful Grand Champions (Zeus and Prada) and bringing them together for a litter of spectacular pups, the theme of the litter had to be stellar as well – so we chose a Diamond theme. For this special girl, loved by an Hawaiian family was named after a famous island landmark, Diamond Head (known in Hawaiian as “Laeahi”), along with a little flair of fun – Hula Girl. And that’s how Misty Mountain Diamond Head Hula Girl – Laeahi – was born.

Life with Laeahi

Laeahi is our favorite dog. She is co-owned and loved by Koa Labradors. Laeahi and her siblings were an amazing litter – they were very quiet, calm and “polite” (especially at the dinner bowl!) which we attribute to their mom, Prada, who has a wonderful temperament. Laeahi has a “take charge” attitude, easily taking the lead with the other dogs in the house. She loves the water and loves to retrieve – much like her dad, Zeus. Laeahi has classic structure with great movement – much like BOTH of her parents. She will be joined in the show ring by her sisters (Clarity and Diamond) and brother Flash (who lives in Hawaii). High hopes for Laeahi and her siblings.

Diamond takes RWB from 6-9 Puppy Class

Another fun Whidbey Island Kennel Club show! On Saturday, 11/19/11, Diamond let her sister, Leahi, take 1st place in the 6-9 puppy bitch class but on Sunday, 11/20/11, she took 1st place and then went on to win Reserve Winners Bitch. Thanks to judge Rita Bell for looking down the line. Their brother, Flash, soon to be going to Hawaii, placed 2nd both days in the 6-9 puppy dog class. Way to go, Toni!

Bala x Zeus Pups Have Arrived!

Bala (CH Rimrock Anlan of Balriggan) and Zeus (GCH Am/Can CH Gingerbred Celestial Thunder JH) are the proud parents of six beautiful black labrador retriever puppies – one boy and five girls – ranging in weigh from 16 – 19 ounces. Mother and puppies are doing well. Please join us in watching them grow via the Retriever Life Puppy Cam.

Misty goes to Washington

Misty (Misty Mtn Miss Independence) has just relocated to Washinton, D.C. Wow! I just got back from the most amazing experience! A friend of mine has just started up a service dog organization at Walter Reed Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland. They are having veterans that are affected with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder train service dogs for other veterans with disabilities. They are doing lots of cutting edge research on the dog-human bond and how it can help heal the ps…ychological wounds these great men and women have suffered.

I am so proud that two of our Labradors that are participating in this effort. Misty and her daughter Olive (out of Zeus x Misty) are working with the program. Misty just started as I dropped her off while I was in Maryland and Olive has been working there since the program’s inception and is one of the most popular dogs with the patients.

I will be writing more about this in Retriever Life but I can honestly say that this trip has changed my life outlook on how important our dogs can be to us.

Leahi takes RWB, Best Puppy in Breed & Best Puppy in Group!

Leahi - Best Puppy in Group

Congrats to 6-month-old Leahi (Misty Mountain Diamond Head Hulu Girl), a Prada x Zeus pup, who showed well at Mount Cheam Canine Association’s dog show in Chilliwack, BC Canada. After she won Reserve Winners Bitch, she went on to compete against the other puppies and won Best Puppy in Breed which gave her the opportunity to participate in the Sporting Puppy Group which she won! Her Group 1 win allowed her to compete for Best in Show Puppy where she got a good look but left happy at the end of the day with her other wins. Thanks to Chantelle of Koa Labradors for loving and showing her. Keep up the nice work!
